Any nice area, I prefer the suburbs, but the city or the farm land is fine.

Most of leading private schools (or public school in UK) are boarding schools although some takes day students. I suggest boys' Eton College (www.etoncollege.com) and City of London School (www.clsb.org.uk), though you asked for co-educational, because they are top schools.

Some of the leading co-educational schools:
Royal Grammar School, Newcastle (www.rgs.newcastle.sch.uk)

Bristol Grammar School (www.bristolgrammarschool.co.uk)

Rugby School (www.rugbyschool.net)

Millfield School (www.millfieldschool.com)

Marlborough College (www.marlboroughcollege.org)

The King's School, Canterbury (www.kings-school.co.uk)

Warwick School (www.warwick.org)

St Edward's School (www.stedwards.oxon.sch.uk)

Wellington College (www.wellingtoncollege.org.uk)

Westminster School (www.westminster.org.uk)

Charterhouse School (www.charterhouse.org.uk)

Ipswich School (www.ipswich.suffolk.sch.uk)

View the links below for more schools.

Hope this helped.

Just go on the independent schools websites and decide on an area. Do read the inspection reports and decide what type of schooling would suit your child. After you have decided on 3 or 4 then go for a visit and see for yourself. Do not be guided by results alone just because a handful of pupils did extremely well it does not mean your child will.

St. Paul's School in Barnes has the best results I think. Westminster is quite good although girls enter in sixth form. Dulwich College is alright but has not been performing as well as other schools. Sevenoaks Eton College

Hymers in Hull. It's not in the nicest part of Hull, unfortunately, but there are nice suburbs nearby.
