i believe in god and jesus, however i do not belong to a church and go weekly.
i am pro-choice, but i would rather see people not have abortions. however i don't know what it is like for someone who is going that route as i have no experience with it.
you say "What I want to know is if there is a god... and he forgives our sins.then why are these people so unforgiving" - well these people aren't god, so i wouldn't worry about them
you also say "If He loves all aparently... yet my gay friend is not welcome in the church unless he repents???" - you are assuming that all churches are the same. they are not. there is a christian science church near where i live and they have a rainbow flag displayed. there are plenty of denominations that allow gay people in.
it sounds like you have had bad experiences with different churches. when i was growing i went to a congregational church and for the most part people were friendly. however with most environments you will get a gossip or two.
not sure if any of this helped, but there you go...

Well ive said it once and ive said it again, Religion boggles the mind. It ends up promoting hate instead of the message of love. Im not denying if there is a God or not because i have no right to say that. As with Abortion i believe its totally up to the person, for instance i believe there is circumstances which are acceptable.
Such as the conception of a baby through rape. What i dont agree with in the Abortion issue is the people who do it on a whim, who dont think twice about giving a damn. Now the Gay issue, oh boy! thats a real toughie, every person deserves happiness and whatever they do as long as it makes them happy and other people (i.e love) then thats no rpoblem with me.
Also bear in mind that if you went to that Church, dont base your whole opinion on that one encounter. After all a minority should not reflect a religion. I hope this helps you out, just be the best person you can be. Good luck on finding the Faith your looking for.

Scientific proof about what? That God exists, or that abortion is wrong? You won't get any "science" for the former, but there is a little for the latter. Killing babies is wrong. No one will question that. At some point, a fetus is a baby and a human being. Figure out when you think that an embryo or fetus is, in fact, a baby and you'll know whether or not abortion is wrong for you. You don't need religion to do that.
As far as the religion is concerned, you'll have to look in your heart to find God. Just remember this: all churches, all religions, and all religious people are not created the same. There are actually plenty of churches that welcome gay people, and plenty of backstabbing gossips that don't go to church. In a lot of cases, the problem is not God, it is just people.

Many churches are like that (too many) and I can't stand it! Christians, or so-called, who act like that, tick me off more than an atheist ever could because they turn people off from a wonderful faith that, when you strip away everything else, is simply about recognizing that "I" am a sinner and I cannot save myself, but that all is not lost.
There is no one that is unforgiveable or unredeemable. Anyone who says that a particular offense is unforgiveable, doesn't read the bible very carefully. Your gay friend would certainly be welcome at my church, though no one would coddle his lifestyle. But no one would chastise him either. The pastor wouldn't tolerate it. I don't think anyone would even dare approach him about it. And if the pastor caught wind of any gossip, he would blast the people involved. Not by name, but they would know who he is talking about. It is only through the word of God preached that one can understand what repentance is and have their eyes opened as to why they personally need to repent. Churches that say you have to repent before entering the church are only shooting themselves in the foot. Why would anyone repent when they don't even understand what it is or why they should?! It's not about fire and condemnation, although I do believe in Hell, it's about a God who wants to love you and is waiting for you to recognize that.
In thinking about it, I would also like to add that the Bible is very clear that Satan can infect a church with his influence just as easily as anything else. And if he can, then why wouldn't he try? His objective is to distort people's view of God. To make nonbelievers come to the conclusion that, if this God does exist he doesn't seem very loving, based on the actions of people who claim to know him, and so, I don't want to know him. Now this is not to use the excuse, "the devil made me do it" because Christians are warned about it and commanded to be vigilant against his influence. But as you have experienced, too many Christians don't get that message. Arrogant people are the most susceptible, because they think they are above it.

Not all churches are backstabbing and vicious. I'm not a religious person, but my friend Dana is gay (has been for 14 years) and I went to his church quite a few times. He's been a member of his church since 1998.
Not everyone against abortion is religious either. Again, I'm not religious, but I am pro life UNLESS the woman has been raped, sexually abused, or the unborn fetus is causing major medical problems (tubal pregnancy, ect). Then I could see having an abortion.

This is a tough subject, while not all churches are like that, many are. I was brought up baptist and now am non denominational. We do not attend church because I have yet to find one that is not like that. I am pro choice and very spiritual. I think so many people forget that being judgemental itself is a very serious sin. Just surround yourself with the people that love, care and respect you for who you are. That is all we can really do. We want desperately to find a church soon to take our baby. We want him/her to have the background infor we have on religion but then when they understand it fully can choose whatever they want to believe, if anything.

there are bigots in every religion or creed they cause the problems for every one else if those who are religious just took on board that there is a higher power who dispenses justice at the end of a persons life and kept there own council life might be better.
I must say again in all religions some people just use religion to cover for there own failings and hide.you cannot say everyone is the same there are good and bad people everywhere in believers or non believers.
You will in time come to your own beliefs but please try and respect other in the process.

Wonderful topic to discuss, wrong section to discuss it in. You'll get a better variety of answers if you post this in the religion section.
God is VERY forgiving and some christians are very judgmental. That's why God is God and humans are humans. We are full of everyday error. If you accept Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, then all of your sins (past, present and future) are forgiven on the spot. Its all the everyday human crap that you have to deal with after that. Not God. You're "all good" in His eyes. lol This is my personal belief/opinion of course. Not everyone has to believe it.

I am sorry you have had such an awful experience with "church" people. Unfortunately your question is very difficult to answer with scientific data.
As a Christian, the Bible is my basic instruction book for life. And we are commanded by Jesus Christ to "Love our neighbor as ourselves" and to "love one another as Christ loved the Church and laid down his life for the Church." The Bible also calls a man laying with another man (or woman with woman) an ABOMINATION to God.
Our journey through Christianity is much like our journey through life.... we learn as we go. It sounds like many of the people you have come in contact with still have a lot of learning to do. Loving the sinner and hating the sin ( for example standing against abortion, and befriending a girl who has had an abortion) is a very difficult concept to put into practice.
GOD loves his entire creation.
The Bible says GOD loved the world (everyone! even you!) so much, that he sent his one and only son, so that if anyone (that is you!) believes in him ( Jesus) he (that means you! if you believe) will not perish, but will have everlasting life. (John, chapter 3, verse 16...paraphrased.)
God also says he is not the author of fear, or hatred
But Satan is in the world like a roaring lion seeking whom he may destroy.
I could go into such lengthy detail, but I am trying to keep this short. If you would like to IM with me more about this, I would be glad to discuss it.
