Study. First learn the most basic Japanese characters Hiragana, then learn katakana (the syllables used to write foreign words in Japanese), then proceed to Kanji. You should consider going to Japan if you`re not already here.
To start learning Japanese for free, visit this site as it helped me a lot. It`s a wonderful resource: Meguro language Center
www.mcljapanese.co.jp.

If you are interested in studying in Japan there is a very affordable language program located in kyoto. Check out the school at this site - The Kyoto Institute of Culture and Language - www.kicl.net.

Good Luck!

I'm Japanese and even for Japanese people, it's hard to learn ALL Japanese words. I mean if you are American, do you think that you know all English words and phrases ? I don't think you do.

Learning any language is very hard and you shouldn't expect to learn everything because you won't learn everything. So lower your expectation and try to start learning a little bit part of Japanese language and then learn more difficult parts of Japanese language later.

All Japanese is a tall order. Conversational, formal, business, colloquial, child, semiformal and the written language of 4500 characters? The average Japanese person will probably cover all the conversational to semiformal and have a basic knowlege of formal japanese. No one knows all the kanji except scholars. Just like most people don't know all 10,000 words in the Websters dictionary.

The best way is to take some japanese here, conversational and then focus on what you want it for. Conversation or business, it is a whole different set of words and honorifics.

Good luck

What you're talking about will take a life-time. Read your own post ? Full of mistakes, not meaning to be mean. Sorry. A class at a Jr. college is a good start. If you can't do that take out some books / tapes at the library. Watching Japanese TV shows will help you pronounce words correctly. Reading and writing Japanese is another matter. Few Americans can read and write Japanese as well as a native.
