See, the world doesn't cater to us higher intellect...just to the general population, and the general population wants to see the story acted out before their eyes and have it be over in 2 hours.
And they make lots of money doing it....
So that's why.

I know why they make the movies: To get more money. I mean, think about it. they made money by selling the book. So, obviously that's not enough, so they have to go and make a movie.
I agree with you, though, they just don't make the movies as good as the books, especially since the movies can't last that long. And yes, there are some people who see the movie and think they know the whole story, when in reality, even the best movie based on a book, is never nearly as good.
For example, take Order of the Phoenix. I watched the movie yesterday and it was pretty good. But then, when you think about the book, is so much better. And there were some things in the movie that went completely against what happened in the book.
Anyway, hope I answered correctly. I know that was quite a long answer. I just got really into it 'cause I thought it was good.

They make books into movies to make money. Many people don't go buy or read the book because they think it takes way to long to read the book so they just take a short cut and watch the movie. The movies leave out really important facts. e.g. Harry Porter, and Nancy Drew. They just always have to leave out the important facts, if they didn't the movie would be like 6 hours, and no one would see it. Hollywood does have good movies that were not books, but they have to keep making money some how. Like Kimberly said" Money makes the world go round." I have to give it to Pixar, and Dreamworks and every other movie making company, the movies are pretty good, but they also leave out the stinkin details.

Some people are not good readers--or don't have the time/patience to read a long novel. To see it on the screen gives them entertainment--in an hour and a half--and, what they missed in the novel, they're not aware of--so it doesn't bother them.
I have read certain books BECAUSE I saw the movie--and wanted to know more. This has happened in a lot of cases, and to other people I'm acquainted with as well.
The opposite has also occurred for me. I've read a good book and pictured the characters a certain way. Then I watch the movie--and see them in a whole new way. I note the differences from book to movie in my head--and sometimes wonder why they left out key elements...

I used to hate that they would butcher books when they put them on the big screen, but then I realized what makes a book good and what makes a movie good are two different things. Now I just enjoy each (if they're enjoyable) and not worry about the differences. My favorite example is the movie Mansfield Park, so much different than the book, but makes for a MUCH better movie than if they had just done the book word for word.

Hollywood is afraid to sink money into a movie without some hope of return. They like popular books hoping it will guarantee those readers will be viewers.
I agree. Most movies are not as good as the book.

From a different perspective, take the Harry Potter Series. Millions of children have read the books, and those saem millions have and will continue to see the movies. Many people, especialy children love to see their favorite characters from their imagination come to life. there's a level of awe and giddiness that makes people want to see them alive and on the big screen.

It is annoying...very seldom have I seen a good job done of a movie that was from a novel. Interview with a Vampire may be one of the very few exceptions. Although I did like The Stand mini series.

I agree. I absolutely refused to see 'The Green Mile' for the longest time after hearing that they were making a movie. It turned out to be a good movie but it was still way better in my head.
They do say "Money makes the world go round". If there's a way, they will exploit it.

Because Hollywood doesn't have imagination anymore. It's easier for film makers to make a book into a movie, or even worse, do a remake yet another old movie or TV show.

I totally agree with you. I have decided to never again see a movie remake of any book I especially liked, because they never do the book justice!
I think they do it because they can't come up with any original ideas!
