No your right I can't prove he doesn't exist but if you can disprove faries, the fact that I'm god, or that jesus isn't the son of the FSM I will throw away my computer

not being able to disprove something doesn't count as proof it does exsist

no one ever disproved Zeus or any other mythological being

we just through logical thinking realised it's too irrational to think they do or did exist because there is no proof for them

Looking at this question from a purely practical standpoint, if the religion & spirituality section were merged with this one, this section would become overwhelmed with modern religions questions, making it near impossible for people to find the questions not relating to modern mainstream religion to answer.

You are correct, of course - the definition of the word "myth" is not (as many people misunderstand) "lie" or "untrue story" but rather it refers to an unproveable story, often rooted in actual historical/factual events, which serves a specific type of purpose, such as explaining a difficult concept, answering a difficult question, or passing on cultural values and morals. Christian beliefs can accurately be called "mythology," though unfortunately most people think that this word refers only to something which is completely untrue, so Christians often get offended at the use of this term to refer to their teachings.

As you say, there are many people (myself included) that see little difference between ancient Greek and Roman myths, and modern Christian, Jewish, and Muslim ones - the modern ones seem no more believable than the ancient ones, and clearly fulfill the same purpose. The main difference is the opinion of the majority, and since so many people consider these ideas to be true, and also because so many people misunderstand the meaning of the word "myth," there is a general separation of "religion" and "mythology" in the modern context.

I agree with you that someday it is likely that religious beliefs will change and modern ones will be looked at with the same attitude as ancient ones (assuming humanity survives that long). But this will likely take a very long time, as most people take religion very seriously, and one can only hope that more often than not they are used to encourage people to treat each other better, rather than to instigate intolerance.

No. Because if it's your religion (and belief) then it's true. It's only other people's religion and beliefs that are myths.
Don't you have any interaction with Christians?
I mean the ancient Egyptians and Greeks didn't believe all those stories about those Gods they built all those temples too they just wanted some place for people to go to hear the stories right?

Although, I agree with the other poster religion in this section would just attract people trying to convert others, hard line defenders of the faith, etc. and create arguments that would take away discussions about myths both ancient and modern. So let religion have it's category and let people live their myths.
By the way this isn't always a bad thing see "Myths to Live By" by Joseph Campbell

Personally, I think if god were real there would be some kind of proof out there but there isn't.
I think it was made up to keep people in line, a way to control others, if God was never brought up nor any religion for that matter what kind of world do you think this would be? God is something for people to believe in so they will have something to believe in, I do not think he exists nor do i believe there is a heaven or hell, I don't even believe there is a satan..
If you ask me I find christianity evil, I mean hell they burned, tortured and murdered the wiccans and pagans because of THERE beliefs, because of what they practiced now tell me if GOD were real, do you think he would actually let that happen? NO!

you're an Atheist, as a results of fact there is not any conclusive info there is not any God. So 'last that door' isn't sensible. additionally if God sounds like the enamel-fairy, or Easter Bunny to you, you do not likely have an particularly sensible, or mature view of ways God's defined in maximum religions. as a results of fact maximum religions follow the very scientific, and anthropological correct that what happens on a micro-scale, is probable to repeat on a macro-scale. So the reality we've an continuously repeating cirlce-of-existence in the international, and a circle-of-existence for our Milky way, that is totally, very probable, that there is an continuously repeating circle-of-existence for the Universe. technological wisdom does not recognize if there's a information guiding the Universe alongside(their basic reasoning, we ought to verify it to believe it), faith believes there is, and is constructive it will be shown. So basically there is in elementary terms a '?' with regards to the main suitable reality, is the Universe alive, or is it in elementary terms a gadget.

It'd funny that I was just thinking that philosophically the two question lists should be merged. I do notice that the other list is dominated by Christian fundamentalists and this isn't.

In reference to the detail that something being unprovable doesn't make it right is true. For further evidence see the debates on String Theory and the fact that none of it's tenets can be tested at present.

You have to understand and accept that God is no myth and neither is Jesus Christ a myth .... And that means that Satan is no myth either....... There will always be people that will not believe in God... But that also will never change the truth of just how real God is.....................................................................
