I just chose to ask this question under the baseball topic because it's baseball season.

Boston and New York isn't the biggest rivalry of all-time. It's the biggest ONE SIDED RIVALRY of all time. The Yankees and Mets have a bigger rivalry.

I'll go with the Dodgers and Giants. Did you hear Brad Penny getting booed two days ago? I mean he got booed louder than Jeter, A-Rod, Peavy, or anybody.

All these Red Sox/Yankee answers lend more evidence to the East Coast bias. Clearly they are a great rivalry, but of ALL TIME. Is this rivalry been this heated for 100 years or only the last 25-30, and even the last ten? I don't see the evidence of an intense Yankees/Red Sox rivalry throughout the American League's 100-year history. Everyone considered the Yankees their rival because they dominated the league.

And as much as I would love to say Cardinals and Cubs (and as a Cardinal fan who grew up in Central Illinois - this was big), I think the same remarks would have to apply. Historically, they were not rivals like they are today.

From an ALL-TIME historical context, I think one has to say the biggest rivalry in baseball is the Dodgers and Giants. They competed in the same league AND same city for a half-century, had the great 1951 moments, and have been a bitter rivalry since I remember. Remember Joe Morgan's home run that knocked the Dodgers out in 82. Did you see how Brad Penny was booed?

In other sports, I agree with the answer who said Army-Navy. We get caught up in other rivalries, including Michigan/Ohio St. because of their team's recent successes. But I think Army-Navy transcends on-field success like no other.

The question you asked was ALL-TIME, not TODAY. So Dodgers-Giants and Army-Navy take the cake.

I think that #1 should be the Army-Navy football game played every December. The Midshipmen have the better all-time record at 51-49-7 over the Black Knights and have taken the Commander-in-Chief trophy the past four years. #2 is the Red Sox-Yankees and #3 is the Ohio State-Michigan football game. Army-Navy is #1 because the question asked what is the biggest rivalry of all-time.
