It is a title rotor aircraft operated by the USAF and the US Marines. It takes off and lands like a helicopter and flies like an airplane. In theory, it flies faster and has better range than a helicopter.

It works....that is what is unusual....
Vertical take off is not an easy thing to design...and there have been some serious accidents in the development of this thing...
