LIke how? it seems our body is capable of renenwing itself forever so why does it slow down at all? it seems like a stupid question but our body seems to be able to carry out functions without a brain so why cant we keep living?

We do seem to heal in so many ways, don't we? Yet past a certain point, the whole process seems to break down. Our skin loses its elasticity and becomes wrinkled, controlling mechanisms become looser than they were, and everything seems to get worse and worse. What you are really asking is not why we die, but rather why we get OLD.

And to a certain extent, if we knew why that was we'd be closer to being able to stop it.

One line of research suggests that it may have to do with accumulated chromosome damage. This damage isn't caused from the outside, but it caused by unravelling and loss of DNA when your cells duplicate themselves. Past a certain point, the damage becomes too great and some of the cells just stop duplicating. Which means less rejuvenation and less, and eventually everything breaks down.

I'm really excited about study being done on a particular gene. It's been found that a certain diet actually can extend many creatures lifespans by as much as 50% (maybe even humans - some are already trying it). It turns out that much of this effect might be traced to a specific gene that is activated when cells are under stress (like low calories) and protects the DNA. And with the DNA protected, it prevents damage from accumulating and aging damage in general.

We'll have to see how it all pans out! Hope that helps!

It isn't capable of renewing itself forever. Those mechanisms degrade and deteriorate and so do we. We cannot carry out functions without a brain. That is the control center. The brain does not renew itself, either. The bottom line is the functions of our bodies begin to work in properly and deteriorate and eventually it gets to a point that we cannot live any longer. Medical science has greatly lengthened that time with prevention and treatment but they can't preserve the body forever.

From a philosophical perspective, death is necessary for a society. Believe it or not you would not want to live forever.

Regardless of all the other so called causes the only thing that kills us is lack of oxygen to the brain. Once the brain is dead so are we. All those other things gets us to that point.

Theres something called apoptosis that limnits the number of times that cells can divide and reproduce themselves. Basically in our genes there is coding that makes our cells begin to make themselves more poorly every time they replicate until evntually the cells just dont work like they should.

There is a finite limit to the correction and repair our bodies can make. When that limit is passed, we die.
