Does this downshift happen when you give it more or sudden throttle? It isn't just shifting into "passing gear" is it?

Trans might be going. When is the last time that you had the fluid replaced/pan cleaned out to for metal and burned trans oil? Is the fluid not pink, is it at the right level? Check that first. Do you have any codes? Many trans shops will test drive for free, but be cautious. If you get a shop opinion-go to more than one and go to the places that test drive for free.

Just in case it is the trans:

If it is the trans, decide what you want to do. If you don't want to invest too much money, you can get a used trans from a junkyard and have a shop install it--shouldn't cast more than $800 all together unles it is a luxury/new car. Or, you can get it repaired with a warranty between $1,100 and $3,000 depending on damage, year, model, warranty length.
