I think as a motivational speaker, first you should influence people and then make friends.

As a motivational speaker, I would rather NOT have the popular vote. If it's action and not apathy, you need to get them stoked up about something. I have heard people say that they like Dr. Phil because he is straightforward and shoots from the hip. If you want a job to get done, you have to light a fire under people's butts to get them going. More often than not I have seen that through a hard-line stance with facts and rational back-up. Popularity comes later when people see the truth and the wisdom of your words, I guess.

I've always disliked that term "win friends" as if it were a contest. It makes it sound so insincere. Like you could "win" them over.... but where is the substance that would keep them with you??

So I will have to go with influencing people. Especially as a motivational speaker you want to hope that your words have enough substance, worth, credibility to influence someone to take a look at themselves..... their path..... their decisions, and re-evaluate what they are doing. Yep..... I would think it would be much better to influence people..... positively.
