I recently purchased a used Treo on ebay. The signal strength is very low. I get one bar in an area that usual provides full bars for my other sprint phone. Is this common for the Treo 650 or do i have defective phone.

No, you don't have a defective phone. I had a Treo 700wx, and had the same thing. I took it into the shop 4-5 times, and it passed every test. I called customer service dozens of times, complaining of poor reception, while others on the same service (Sprint) had no problems at all. Finally, one of the tech support people told me that the Palm Treo Smart phones simply were designed FIRST as PDAs and SECOND as phones. They tend to have 1-2 bars less signal strength than a regular phone. After lots of yelling and screaming, Sprint finally took the phone back, gave me a refund, and I got a Sanyo Katana ... no dropped calls since.
