Since it is your first trip, you definitely want to stay on the strip where all the action is. I would suggest either the Stratosphere or the Imperial Palace for a low cost room.
Stratosphere is often the cheapest priced room on the strip many nights. Its usually around $50 a night mid week and $120 on weekends. It has a fun casino, good collection of restaurants and the Tower is one of the "must see" attractions in Vegas. The downside is the location. It is atthe far north end of the strip and only the Sahara is within walking distance. The Duece doube decker bus runs right in front so that is a option to get to other places on the strip.
The Imperial Palace is also one of the more affordable places on the strip and the location cant be beat. It is dead center strip, within an easy walk of 10 or 12 casinos including Venetian, Bellagio, Caesars and Mirage. The downside is that it just isnt the nicest hotel in town. It is one of the older ones in the area and she is starting to get long in tooth.
So basically it comes down to what you value in a hotel. Would you prefer a nicer place with a not so good location or the not so nice place with a great location? It all depends on what you are planning on doing. Im sure you will have a great time either way.
Another option would be the Flamingo if you want to spend a little more. It is in the same great location as the IP but it is considerably nicer and has a great pool.
Have a great trip!

My favorite places to stay that are a "good bargain/price" and very nice and have all the amenities that I want (i.e. buffets, bars, lounges, great casino) are the following:
1. Luxor - this casino has a HUGE pool and has about every game that you want to play (including a nice poker room). It also has a pretty cheap buffet compared to the other mainstreem hotels, and the rooms are very nice and its cool being in a hotel that has slanted ceiling b/c it is in the shape of a pyramid. You can get rates near $70-80/night with early bookings during the week, and ~ 150-180/night on holidays/wkends
2. New York New York - This hotel always has deals and has a lot of great bars and restaurants, and the people that stay here seem generally younger. The games are great here (no poker room) and the atmosphere is fast and loud (so if you want a quieter hotel this is not for you). Price is around $80-90/night early booking/wkdays, $150-170/wkends.
3. Monte Carlo - Has a great Micro brewery and great casino as well - which is something I always look for. The buffet here is probably one of the best bargains around. The swiming pool here is pretty nice too, though Luxor's pool definately is the best. Price is around $80-90/night early booking/wkdays, $150-170/wkends.
4. Mirage or Treasure Island - These are a little more pricey, but you do get a little more for what you pay for. The rooms a little bit nicer, and each have a nice club/lounge that is trendy and fun to hang out in (Tangerine in Treasure Island, JET at Mirage). They has have great buffets in each - much better in quality than the previously mentioned, but also at a much higher price ($30/person vs. < $18 at the other places). Price is around $120-130/night early booking/wkdays, $200-280/wkends.
You can also stay at cheaper places like the Stratosphere, Circus Circus, Excalibur, Tropicana, if you'd like - but I wouldnt recommend it (Price is around $60-70/night early booking/wkdays, $120-140/wkends.). Hotels in Vegas ARE the MAIN attraction, so I would spend a little extra money, plus this would prevent you from having to spend a lot of money on cabs. Have fun and hope this helps.

Depending on what weekend you are coming in, usually weekends are at a higher price her e in Vegas. A little bit of information. Saraha is at the north end of the strip, but there are many ways of getting around, the monorail, deuce bus (double decker city bus) and there are always cabs. Also the Flamingo is right on the strip, actually right in the middle of the strip. Across from Caesars Palace/Mirage area. As for inexpensive on a weekend, most of the 4 star properties are right around $200 a night ( give or take $20), the Sahara and the hotels that are a little bit further from the middle of the strip or off the strip are right under $100 per night. If its your first time to Las Vegas, maybe splurge a little bit, I would look into the Signature at MGM, beautiful property, gives you a suite stay at hotel room price on the strip. Access to amenities at the MGM. For a suite that would cost a little bit less and is off the strip ( I know you are trying to stay on the strip) Tuscany Suites they have nice rooms, a casino, restaurants. Just a little bit of information to look into. Hope this helps.

I had friends stay at the Flamingo and they didn't complain. But I might also recomend somewhere a little off the strip, like The Orleans, The Rio, ect. They are still very close, but might be cheaper than staying on the strip. If you are not concerned about being right downtown, then I would suggest The Silverton or Arizona Charlie's.

From what I have heard, Las Vegas is the same 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; most hotel rates anywhere are higher on week-ends because people are willing to pay more. It's not so much supply and demand as it is the willingness of so many people to pay any price for what they want; okay maybe it is partially supply and demand.

I suggest Bally's. It is centrally located right smack dap in the middle of the strip and the prices are much cheaper than Ceasars, the Bellagio, Wynn and the Venetian. These hotels are all great and a must see (all within walking distance from Bally's), but the rooms are outrageously priced. What do you do in your room anyway...sleep? Bally's is connected directly to Paris, so its almost like you're staying there for half the price!! Have fun!

I stayed at the Sahara a few years ago, it is on the strip but kind of far down. It was clean, their casino was fun, the only downside was the far walk to most of the other stuff on the strip. I think they have a roller coaster too.
I have a friend who frequently stays at the Flamingo and loves it. It is just off the strip, but she says it is nice and she wouldn't stay anywhere else.

I live here & I like the Tropicana. They have a balconies, I like to have one. The Trop has a very large pool. I think it is a nice one. It is going to be hot! But the casinos are very cold inside. It is hot to be walking abound a lot. You can rent a car for cheap. You should go on line & look up Vegas.com, they are helpful. Luxor is very nice as well. I like that one too. Good luck!!!
