Proud: I may have the quote slightly wrong, but I'm pretty sure his statement leans in your favor. And I too am a Conservative, so blow that out your pie hole. Alot you seem to know, huh?

I can see this is a very touchy subject for the Libs out there.
I did not ask if you thought he was right or wrong, I asked about your thoughts. Dont take it personally. Just tell us what your thoughts are...

It's dead on. I was more liberal in my 20's, back when I was in college and my parents were paying all my bills. When I had to go out into the world and get a job and pay my own way, I became a conservative.

Recently I met this guy named Eric where I intern at this animal hospital. Well one day he was like "Oh so you want to be a vet?" I told him "No, actually the first choice of a place to intern could've been at the mayors office to learn more about politics." etc etc etc. We found out our political ideology were very simliar to each other. Even though he is like an unmarried guy at 45 (almost got married, but the girl bailed last minute) and I am only 18, we feel that these politicians should be giving back some of their money to the people. Stop spending so much on this war, give jobs back to the American people, give illegal immigrants some sort of temporary I.D. even if its just for working so we can ATLEAST keep track of them. We both knew that politicians are corrupt, but when they die why do they need so much money? For waht? when they die their not going to take it with them right? Why not give it to the people, some American people are living below the poverty line and starving, while we are giving jobs to the people in China and India. (Not racist against chinese ~.~ I am chinese) We just feel it's not right to give some other nation OUR American jobs. So to the main point I believe it all starts from where and how you grew up in. If you grew up poor, and become a blue collar worker, you are going to be a liberal. If you grow up rich, live rich, don't need to work, or a retired person with money, you'd become conservative. Just like Florida, always conservative since all the retired folks/rich people don't want to get taxed more

I think he was trying to comment on a general political trend where as people get older they get more conservative. People are generally more liberal when they are younger and idealistic and as they grow up, they start earning more money (thereby benefiting by conservative ideology) and start to see the world more for what it is than what it should be, they transition to a more conservative political ideology.

I think it represents (something i´ll get a lot of thumbs down for)
a standard arguement about why men are better leaders than women.....
Men think with thier brains, women think with thier hearts....(chill, this is a generalization, not 100% of men or women, etc..)
so conservatives, have no hearts and think only with thier brains and always choose the lesser of the 2 evils...
whereas liberals always think with thier hearts, and when there´s a tough decision that has to be made, but people toes will get stepped on, they cannot make the decision...

I think it comes down to this.. you are either always trying to improve the US.. or you are trying to protect the improvements you have already made. Many people become comfortable with the changes they have fought for.. and to try and protect them they become more conservative. Those that are still marching on stay more liberal.. that doesn't mean they lack a brain.. just that they still have the energy and will to march on.
It takes both types to make the US work right.

It's a truism that's true about 50% of the time.
Winston Churchill was a dyslexic and he's one of Bush's heroes. Bush believes he's emulating Churchill's steadfastness by staying the course in Iraq.
So the long and the short of it is that I'd take the saying, Churchill, and Bush all with a grain of salt.

Misquoted...but essentially the same meaning
I agree.
A child lives in a world of entitlements...when they strike out on their own, they still believe someone above will pick up the tab (substitute parent with government)
They are very generous with money that grows on trees.
When they become trees themselves they leave utopia and enter reality.

Depends.
Young people want to change the world to the way they want it, thus they are liberal. Older people have often already seen many of the changes they wanted (or they have gotten rich and bought into the system) so they begin to drift toward conservatism.
The majority of the most intelligent older people I know, though, are still very liberal.
Also, I've gone from being a very conservative youth, to being an extremely liberal adult.
