The Google toolbar in my Firefox has recently installed itself without mine or anyone else's consent, and every time I try to uninstall it, it re-installs itself (again, without my consent).
Unless I'm mistaken, Google takes information from your computer through these and that requires the user's consent, does it not? Isn't this illegal?

I have tried deleting it from the add-ons but it says it will be un-installed from firefox the next time firefox is started, but then it just installs itself again. (as usual w/o my consent) *this is starting to **** me off*

Firefox *may* have come with the Google toolbar already installed (I don't know...I've always had it...) but...go to Tools=> Add-ons and you should be able to remove it. As far as what Google may gather about you, it fully depends upon what "buttons" you have on your Google toolbar. If you go over to the right end of it, you'll see a little green circle with a down-pointing arrow, which leads to Settings, which you can carefully diddle so that Google will store as little as possible, up to nothing.

The main sort of interest Google has is, money! Google stores your browsing patterns, so's they can see what sorts of *business* sites you visit, so's when you search for stuff, they can *sort of* a *leedle bit* favor that sort of business in *your* search results and *sort of* a *leedle bit* favor that sort of business in the ads displayed down the right side of the page, so's to make it more likely you'll click on the business and gain those businesses some bucks.

Of course, those businesses, in turn (through the enterprise called Adwords) are paying Google for the favor!

Firefox now incorporates what they call a "googlebar" so it is Firefox that is installing it, not Google. See below.
