If your board supports one speed of ram and you place ram that is a faster speed that ram will be clocked down to match the boards max speed.

Basically PC2700 will run at PC2100 speed if that is the max the board can handle.

The PC 2700 will slow down to the speed of the slower PC2100 chip. And that is if the two chips are compatible, IE, they may not work together at all.

you can use the pc2700 without any problems but it will run at the pc2100 speed

If your motherboard can handel it nothing, but if your motherboard is only for max PC2100 then it wouldn´t help you, you would be paying more money for the 2700 and your motherboard is going to down size it to 2100.

ideally they should match, however it will simply run at the slower clock speed. just make sure if you need sodimm both are sodimm, etc dimm and sodimm are not the same and that is more important. crucial.com is best place for memory both price wise and offer free scans and info.
