Latch hook rug - not a kit?

Question

For 4H, my son is signed up to make a latch hook rug, which he's done before, but it can't be from a kit. Are there stores that sell the "background thing with the little squares", and patterns (or are there sites that let you download free patterns)? And do stores sell yarn in little bundles, or would we need to buy balls of yarn and cut it to size? Any input would be appreciated, thank you.

Thank you. We live near Lansing,MI and they have Michael's and Hobby Lobby. We'll check both of those out.

I am sure that any good craft store would have the bundles and the latch hook cloth sold separately. I go to a store called Hobby Lobby that has most everything I need. There is a store called herschners and they have a website. What I might suggest is that you go to one of the search engines and put latch hook supplies in and see what you get. I have also gotten lots of free crochet patterns on-line, so I cannot see why you would not be able to do the same with latch hook patterns. I use www.craftown.com and have found it to be a good website. Good Luck with this project!!

If you want a different length of yarn or just can not find the bundles in the right colours, you can also make them yourself.

Take a hardwood bar (like a ruler but thicker,) around which you wind the yarn, only one or two layers. Cut at one narrow side of the bar.
The size is determined by the size of the bar.

For a pillow cover you can use any kind of yarn, for a rug best stay with the same kind of yarn that are sold in the bundles.

You can also use cross stitch patterns that have bigger parts, or enlarge a cross stitch pattern so each stitch will become 4 strands of yarn in the rug.
Or draw the outlines on the canvas, indicate the right colours with coloured markers and hook away.

Michaels sells rug canvas marked in Blue Squares so you can make your own designs. I don't know if they sell bundles of pre-cut yarn or not. There is also a company called Mary Maxim's I believe it is Port Huron Michigan. They sell both the canvas and wool. If you are in Canada Mary Maxim is in Paris Ontario.
