i strongly suggest valerian root. it's great at relieving stress and tension! you can get it over the counter and it's a great sleep aid! if you have one of those "racing minds" or "i can't turn my head off no matter how tired i am" then this will definitely help. you can find at your local grocery store in the pharmacy or herbal remedy section. start off taking 500-1000mgs, 30-45 minutes before you go to bed. now you can get this stuff in capsule form and it's 100% safe (my whole family has been taking it for years and our family doctor actually recommended it) however the only downside is that the more potent the brand your taking the stronger the smell. and this stuff smells AWFUL! but it's worth it. within 5-7 days you should notice a definite change in your sleep.
WARNING! i strongly do not suggest that you take Tylenol PM and booze, in any form or combination. the main ingredient in Tylenol PM and Advil pm, or benadryl for that matter is diphenhydramine. here's what happens when you take it:
You can walk into a drugstore and choose from an array of sleep aids, offered without prescription. The main ingredient of over-the-counter sleeping pills is an antihistamine. Antihistamines are generally taken for allergies, but also make you feel very sleepy. Common over-the-counter sleep medications are Sleep-Eze, Sominex, Nytol, and Unison; they contain antihistamines such as:
diphenhydramine hydrochloride,
diphenhydramine citrate, or
doxylamine succinate.
In general, over-the-counter sleep medications are not a good choice because they:
Are not intended for long-term use.
Interfere with mental alertness during the day, so you should avoid driving and other similar tasks. You may also be at risk for falling asleep
Reduce the quality of your sleep by reducing time you spend in deep sleep.
Use over-the-counter sleep medications only for transient or short-term insomnia and in conjunction with changes to your sleeping habits. Be sure to pay attention to your body’s physical response to these sleep medications.
also look at the links on the website i've listed they have some good remedies!
I hope this helps!

Most people are saying take meds. I'm saying are you taking any medicines at the minute...I know I was and the dose was too high and once it was lowered by the doc....I slept better, didn't feel sleepy during the day. No matter how sleepy you are try and resist during the day otherwise you haven't a chance of a good nights sleep
You sound as if you have a regular routine at night, batgh, bed at much the same time, then like someone said listed to a relaxing CD or even reading sometimes puts me to sleep.

Try this , it work´s. Once you have had your shower or bath, and are ready for bed. Find a nice CD you can relax too. put it on a low volume, just enough so you can just here it. Now get comfortable. Now imagine your body is full of SAND, your body feel´s so heavy , you can´t move. The SAND in your Leg´s , The SAND in your upper half of your Body is making impossible to move. How heavy the SAND feel´s in your arms, Now imagine your body has tiny little holes , and the SAND is mow slowly pouring out of the holes in your body, How nice it feel´s That the SAND is slowly , slowly flowing from your body , Your body feel´s so relaxed, Relax your body is now becoming free Of all the Sand. This work´s , it might take a few turn´s doing this , but just keep thinking how heavy the Sand is , and you will soon fall asleep

I take a tylenol pm and then I lay in bed and make ABC lists. Like I try to think of an actors name, a food, or an activity for every letter of the alphabet. Usually by the time I get halfway through the alphabet I'm falling asleep. I have to do something to keep my mind engaged because not being able to stop thinking about things is what keeps me awake.

Have you spoken to a doctor about this.. there are many medications you can take for short periods to help you get on track,,, i take ambien cr its expensive but it works well.. there are many many others also. i would talk to the doc :)
If you dont want to go the medicine route.. you could try a hot bath before bed.. or a little reading, or if you have a significant other.. maybe you can get a massage ;)

Simple as it sounds, try 2 tabs of "corral calcium "3X a day you will be amazed how good you will sleep. Don't know why but it works for me. Better than drugs.

Standard answer:
If you can't sleep, get up and do something. I have found that it is normal to have normal routines interrupted.
Not standart answer: Perhaps you need something else going on.
