To find 15 % of 97, you multiply 97 by 15 and divide the result by 100.
97x15/100=1455/100=14.55 percent
14.55 %

You can do it the traditional way that is
97 - (97*15/100) = 97 - 14.55 = 82.45
Or the faster way, whereby when you discounted 15% from the original price, you're left with 85% of it
So, 97*85/100 = 82.45
Either way should give the same answer

This is easier for tips, which is what I think you're doing here: 10% plus 5% is 15%. No matter what. So... 10% of 97 is $9.70, and 5% is half of that. Estimate if you're at a restaurant or something. That's like $4.80. Add 'em together and you get $14.50. It saves me a lot of grief. If you're trying to be exact, practice the methods from the other people's comments with rounder numbers like 100 or 1000.

Quickest way I"ve seen is to
multiply by .15. Yes, using fractions can also get you the right answer, but working with percents it's easier to think of 'dollars and cents" so 15% is .15 cents on the dollar.
On paper it looks like this:
97.00
x .15
-----------
48500
9700
-----------
14.5500
Your 15% is quickly found at 14.55
Then simply take 14.55 from 97.00 = 82.45
Now, another way to do this is to us the reverse percents.
If you're taking 15% off, then the result would be 85% of the whole. (100% - 15% = 85%) So merely multiplying .85 x 97.00 gets the same answer.
97.00
x .85
------------
48500
77600
----------
82.4500

Another words if you take .15 times 97=14.55
then subtract 14.55 from 97
you will have your answer 82.45
