does anyone from cleveland agree that hafner is not worth 57 mil for 4 years? that is money out of cc's pocket. with all the young talent we have, anyone of them could fill in at dh. 57 mil for someone batting 260? thats crazy. i know he picked it up lately, but not worth it at all.

The Indians did over pay to some degree but they had to lock him up and keep him away from other powerhouses in the AL.

To Hafner's credit, his numbers have increased in production year by year.

Hafner is still young...and from the looks of it, he hasn't even reached his prime yet. Last season the guy had what...6 grand slams? He gets the job done, even though he's not producing as well as he should/could be this season. He will come around in the 2nd half, and he will definitely prove to be worthwhile in the next 4 years. There are a lot of guys in the MLB that don't deserve what they are making, and are getting overpaid...but comparing some of them to Hafner and what he's making, I say he deserves it, and he's worth it. They do have young talent, yes...but he's going to help carry them and lead them to a WS in the next 1-3 years. Just watch..

Hafner's Batting avg over the last 3 years was much higher than this season's. So it is likely he will improve there.
You are right, $14 million a year is a bit much for a player who is just meant to hit lots of HRs and drive in runs. He isn't the best fielder. So his salary is more market driven.
On the other hand keeping good players is a way to entice other good players to stay or come to your team, as well as bring in fans.

You have to look beyond the money you pay one player and make sure you have enough left in the pot to retain others you want to keep on the team. Look at the Twins, they appear to be willing to let Hunter go so they can sign Santana when the time comes. I believe the money they gave Hafner is a fair number when you look at his market value as a free agent and I also believe they will re-sign CC when the time comes.
