In India, the following places (the main Shiva temple of these places, to be exact) are said to be representing the five elements..
Water - Thiruvanaikoil
Air - Kalahasti
Fire - Thiruvannamalai
Space - Chidambaram
Earth - Kanchipuram or Thiruvarur.

My question pertains to the ambiguity with respect to the element Earth. Is kanchipuram or Thiruvarur or both the place representing earth. ?

As per various sources these are the places where God appeared glorified in the form of one of the Pancha BUthas. SrikaLahasthi is in Andhra Pradhesh. All others are in Tamil Nadu.

ThiruvAnaikA - appu - water
ThiruvaNNAmalai - thEyu - fire
ThirukkALahasthi - vAyu - air
Chidhamparam - AkAsam - sky
KanychIpuram(Ekamparam) - pruthvi - land

THIRUVARUR IS NOT A PANCHA BHOOTHA STALAM. There is no abmiguity of what you have mentined. Only Kancheepuram is the BHOOMI stalam.

Sri Thiyagaraja temple located at Tiruvarur is dedicated to Somaskanda aspect of Shiva. The temple complex has shrines dedicated to Vanmikanathar, Tyagarajar and the Kamalaamba. The temple complex covers an area of over 20 acres and the Kamalalayam temple tank covers around 25 acres. The temple tank is one of the largest in the country, and the temple chariot is the largest of its kind in Tamil Nadu.-
