Did you "format" the hard drive before you re-installed Windows XP? If not, I suggest you go back and do that, because even if Windows XP is now installed correctly, there is the possibility that the virus is still on the disk.
If you formatted your drive before re-installing XP, go to your Control Panel and open the System icon. Click the "Hardware" tab and then click the "Device Manager" button. Scroll down to Network Adapters (the list is in alphabetical order). Are your adapters showing properly?
If not, correct the adapter problem (may be a 'driver' issue), and see if you can add a network connection.
If the adapters are showing properly, but you don't have any "New Connection Wizard", then email me. I'll try my best to help.

Sounds like you have 2 problems.
1 There ought to be a network connection showing even if it's disconnected and this would be your LAN (Ethernet) socket. You probably need to install more drivers from a motherboard disk which came with the computer.
2 It sounds like you use an ADSL modem to get on the internet and that will have a setup disk of it's own and you need to give it your user settings. They should both have been supplied by your ISP when you signed up.

Probably you do not have the drivers installed for your ethernet adapter. Right click on "my computer", then properties, hardware tab, device manager and see if you have anything with a yellow ? showing. If yes, you will need to locate the drivers for those items and install.
Also, the "high speed internet" icon sounds like a 3rd party installation. So if you have a cable modem, it probably comes from a disk that came with it. That is not a standard icon in win xp

You probably do not have the motherboard drivers loaded. Next, make sure that your computer is looking at the RJ45 port for it's internet connection. That is done in Internet Options under the Connections tab.

You may have to set up you internet connection manually. Go to control panel and you will find "Network Connections", go to this. In the top left it will give you the option to setup a new connection. If you are unsure of the settings you may have to contact your ISP.
