If I buy a car, I can completely disassemble it and make whatever I want from the parts. If I buy software, I cannot legally do this. Something's wrong here. Laws concerning these things need to change so that they're more in line with other products and services we are used to, because of the lack of clarity software companies (especially Microsoft) have taken it upon themselves as to declare total control over their product / service. In fact, most software you don't own but rather have a license to install and use. Absolutely ridiculous! When I buy it, I own it and I should be able to do whatever I want with it.

Hacking in and of itself shouldn't be a crime, but theft or obtaining sensitive information illegally will always be a crime.

Ethics says Yes, but Legality says "depends on your INTENT". If you exploit something to the end of doing something which may be illegal, then perhaps Yes, but if you exploit the software with the intent of creating a protection or better software, then the answer may be No.

It is not illegal to discuss software and exploit it in the way you are discussing. Exploiting an error in software is not "hacking" unless you used it to break into a secure environment. Discussing the fallacy in a type of technology isn't hacking, it's democracy.
