I was told (and it's true) that we fought wars to eliminate slavery, communism and all that other hoopla.

So when (IF) this [Iraq] war is over, how will my life be better? How is it better now?

please spare me with insults such as "you will never understand", "this is a stupid question", "read a book", "I don't know what you are talking about". I have heard them all, and WILL report.

Open Thoughts- damn right its all about me. It should be, as an American citizen I am more concerned about my American brothers and sisters than some Iraq character. it has to be this way, since our politicans don't think of us.

Do you remember when Clinton said this:
"The hard fact is that so long as Saddam remains in power, he threatens the well-being of his people, the peace of his region, the security of the world.

The best way to end that threat once and for all is with a new Iraqi government -- a government ready to live in peace with its neighbors, a government that respects the rights of its people."

You have been misinformed. We the USA never fought any war to eliminate slavery.

Do you mean the "War of Northern Aggression"?

That was not about slavery. Think logically, every other nation in the world managed to eliminate slavery w/o a war, but not the USA? It's a joke. The War of Northern Aggressions was about long standing economic policies that has put the south at an extreme disadvantage in terms of development of infrastructure, industry, and education.

We never fought any wars against communism. Perhaps you should read "War is a Racket" a book written in the 1930, by a man who (is still) the most decorated general in the history of this country.

Wars that were claimed to be "about communism" were almost exclusively about lining the pockets of the Military-Industrial complex (remember "Daddy Warbucks").

It can even be extended to our involvement in the World Wars. What effect would there have been on American lives had Germans won control of Europe? We would have European cars that run right?

The bottom line is, this is just an example of American imperialism, and the only way that American lives could be improved by this war would be if we did what the British used to do, and colonize Iraq.

So, with your question, I am hearing that it is all about you. What about the impact on Iraq? How about the freedom to have an opinion which was not given to them by Saddam. How about not fearing that Saddam's sons were going to rape you or drop you into a human shredder. How about the hope of eventual freedom. And do not even BEGIN to claim that they are not already better off than they were. You want to know the truth about that. Ask someone from Iraq who is currently in America. My best friend, and several friends I met through him is from Iraq. They ALL say that their families in Iraq are better off, and that liberals in this country have no idea how much of a monster Saddam was.

Oh, your question did not address people in Iraq. I for got. It is all about you. Okay, we will talk about your selfish self. We are fighting terrorists in IRaq and Afghanistan...not here. If that does not make sense to you...nothing will.

Doc...ROFLMAO!!! About OIL? You mean the very oil that we have not touched ONE DROP OF???? GET REAL! The oil should be paying for the rebuilding of Iraq, but the politicians are so afraid that the radicals like you would scream "I told you it was about oil" that they will not even do THAT!!! That dog won't hunt...get over it.

Joking with you------------> "you will never understand", "this is a stupid question", "read a book", "You don't know what you are talking about".

lol!
Seriously though:
Well I don't know how your life in particular will be better but doesn't the humanitarian goal of liberating a people of a dictatorship and giving a people their country back and inserting a democracy sound like a good thing? There's more to list about what good they will have in their future if we continue. If (and I hope when) we win wouldn't it be great to have another ally in that region of the world and regain respect with other nations at the same time? After all, most of the left thinks to world hates us. I know you're an Independent but come Jahpson.....isn't freeing a whole country a noble thing?

Hello,

Overall things will not be better for anyone. Not all societies of the world accept the idea of democracy; they like and are happy working with tribal type systems or one man leader situations. The continent of Africa is a classic example.

Be that as it may, dictators types in the Middle East from Nassar in Egypt to the Shah of Iran through to Saddam Hussien had their states quite secular and kept those radical, fanatical groups, slowly growing like a cancer since the late 1940's in their place in jail or in the grave. By invading and trying to democrasize these countries we have just opened a classic Pandora's Box which has let these demons loose on the world. Now we shall pay the price.

Stop thinking so small. Chances are most global issues don't effect any of us directly. Honestly I can't say if this war is for the best. Personally I wouldn't want to go to Iraq but we'll never know how things would have been different if this war never happend.

Dear Jahpson,
I cannot really give you a straight answer. Reading through the responses, it seems most people REALLY don't understand how we've arrived here today. Let me say, that it was and IS very much about oil and not nearly so much about terrorism.
Back in the days of the Reagan presidency, it was deemed necessary to reflag the foriegn oil tankers passing through the region -- along with a U.S. naval escort to ensure their safe passage. He understood that the world economy runs on oil.
Saddam invaded Kuwait. He wanted their oil AND their seaport. The U.N. did nothing. Bush put together a coalition of forces and drove the invaders out. The U.N. negotiated the cease fire agreement. The first U.N. weapons inspector resigned in disgust over the lack of cooperation and support by all parties. Does anyone remember at all, the months of diplomacy that ultimately failed in trying to get Saddam to come clean? He did not take Bush (Jr) seriously. And why should he? The U.N. was in his back pocket. So, it was left up to another U.S. lead coalition to enforce the 17 major infractions of the first Gulf War cease fire agreement. Add to this, the only (at the time, believed to be credible) source of intel coming out of Iraq -- a chemical engineer, claiming Saddam was building more chemical weapons. He lied. Sadly, President Carter years before had gutted the CIA and left the U.S. blind and dependent upon the good graces of foreign intel services. So, the CIA was not allowed to question directly the chem. engineer. He now admits he lied. And the insult to injury there is, he's still living large on our dime in Germany. We can't touch him.
The oil/politics of the region are such that the Saudis stand to lose a great deal should the U.S. pull out of Iraq without securing it's borders and stabilizing that country. Iran stands to gain a great deal should we pull out. Remember, I ran sits atop the world's third largest oil reserve and can do virtually nothing with it. Their oil wells are all over 50 years old and in a rate of decline in production of 13% per year. Last year, they were actually forced to import petroleum for domestic use! Considering their anti western rhetoric and their willingness to export terrorism to Iraq, can you now see why they want nuclear capabilities and the risk the rest of the world faces should they acheive it?
Having said all of that as a preface to the answer to your question, I believe that currently, you gain little to nothing in personnal comfort. But, having intially won the war but lost control of both the borders and outside influence (Saudi Arabia, the U.S. and Iran), should the U.S. pull out prematurely, the world's economy will be turned on its ear. Iran will gain control of the region and the majority of the world's oil supply to which the west will then be made to pay greatly. Your personnal comfort then will tank out.

I never supported the invasion of Iraq. But, the answer to your question in theory would be that you are still alive.
Whether this is true or not we may never know, Iraq could have been like a speeding, out of control car headed straight toward you.

We engaged an enemy on foreign soil forcing them to concentrate their efforts to defeat us there rather than on our mainland. You can go to bed at night and sleep without hearing the battles that are being waged. Muslim Extremists seek to eliminate our society, Israel and all that we enjoy - this is their goal and they will utilize measures which you would think are atrocious in order to further their agenda. You, as a woman in America can work, can walk beside a man and not behind him, do not need to cover your hair and skin when in public, are not subjected to genital mutilation and enjoy rights that are unheard of in strict Muslim nations. The extremists hate this, and I would think that you, as a woman, would appreciate the fact that we are fighting to prevent their philosophy from being spread. We are safer, look at the world as a whole and not just Iraq - Iraq is just the point of engagement at present time.

your life will not be better after this war for it is only going to make more people hate Americans then there already are. We have had a great number of good Americans die in wars so that we would have our freedoms that we are currently taking away from these other people in Iraq. This is just a war so that rich white men can become richer with building contracts and oil company's getting their pipeline to the Caspian sea. That is what these poor solders are dying for, rich whites to get richer.
