They are called cicadas, most people call them locusts. They're not just in NC, trust me! They're EVERYWHERE. I've lived all over the country, and every place we go, there they are. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do about their presence, nor the obnoxiously loud noise they make. You just learn to ignore them.

It's pretty certainly NOT cicadas - they zing during the day, and you say it's at night. There are several kinds of bush and tree crickets that call at night - the most famous kind would be the Katydid. They get very loud, and if there are a bunch together, it can be hard to hear anything else. NC is certainly in the right area, and this is the right time of year for them. Katydids make a 3- and 4-part call that sounds (not surprisingly) like "Ka-Ty-Did" "Ka-Ty-Didn't" over and over.

Its Cicadas. Good news is they only come in cycles that can be 15-17 years though some are on shorter cycles(2-5). So while it may be noisy this summer it should be quieter next year and possible for years to come.

It's called a Cicada or sometimes referred to as a Locust although not a true one.
Btw, they're not just in NC...they're all over. I'm in MO & we have them everywhere.
