If you're talking about supporting weight, an arch, no question. But when you put many triangles together, they can become as strong if not strong than an arch as the weight is distributed accross more area with more support. But one-on-one, an arch wins by a landslide.

well it depends.
Under compression the arch would be stronger than the triangle, assuming that the ends of the arch are anchored so that they don't deflect under the weight. without anchor points the arch would not be able to hold itself together as it is an open ended structure and the triangle would be stronger if no anchor points where used.
under tension the arch would just fall apart while the triangle due to its closed nature would be stronger.
So no need for a divorce they are both right.

A triangle is more balanced. I'm willing to bet that the triangle is. Tri in Latin means "three" and tripods have three legs, because the number of legs balance every other leg out. A tricycle is great when children ride them, because you can't easily fall off when you ride them, and that is why children will like a tricycle, because of the three wheels. In geometry we would build bridges with a standard of three tooth pics per section of the bridge. I don't know about an arch though. I never learned that they could be strong. I think that maybe a triangle is better in strength and balance because of the rule on tri/three, but maybe an arch could be strong. I think that an arch would be a cool experiment, but I would have no clue. I personally think that a triangle will hold up better.

An Arch is always stronger. In an Arch the pressure put upon it depends on each and every stone nerby creating this arch. In a triangle the walls have no support from neaby . The strongest portion is the very tip but the walls again have no support from Bowing and collapsing.
