Hello,
I have a idea invention-wise for an academic based product...what do recommend should be the next steps to putting it on the shelves. I know that I eventually need a prototype... can you recommend a manufactuer? (preferably in the northeastern area)

"Northeastern area" is very vague, I don't even know what country you're in.

First though, you need to get it down, write up diagrams galore until you have a clear one that illustrates well what you're thinking. Make sure to think things through.

Then you need to apply for a patent for your invention. The process of applying I think costs a bit and takes forever, but you can still work on it, even sell it even if the patent hasn't gone through yet, it's called "patent pending" and you'll see that on a lot of products awaiting patent certification, just because it takes so long. Copyright is automatic, patenting is not, and takes a long time.

But after you've applied for a patent, which you do by going to a patent lawyer in your area which should make things easy, after that you build your prototype. You don't need a manufacturer for this necessarily, if it's simple you can put together one yourself. If not then the easiest option is likely to go to a University or College and ask around for the department that deals with design and drafting and such, see if they can help you design and build a prototype. This should be far cheaper as well compared to going right to a manufacturer.

Make sure after applying for your patent that you put "patent pending" on anything to do with it.

The next step is to produce it yourself, or sell the patent, or allow someone else to produce it and give you royalties(this option being the best, as it's lowest risk to you, and you get a kickback, a lot of inventors go this route).

Anyhow, there's likely a ton of books on the topic, look online, or go to your local bookstore.

Most major universities (engineering department) have the ability to create prototypes. The equipment they would use for this would be called "rapid prototyping equipment." And, they will be less expensive that going to a private company. That's where I would begin. I've had 2 prototypes built by local schools.

Before you get a manufacturer - you want to protect your idea if it's an invention. Go to the main public library in your town and request information on the patent process. You may even want to copyright it until you at least get a provisional patent which marks the date and gives you 1 year to actually apply for the patent itself. Get a non-discolosure agreement and have people sign it before discussing your idea for further assistance.

Good Luck
