In the big box stores I see Dewalt and other brand 70-100 piece drill bit sets for good prices. If I'm using a Makita should I search for Makita bits or would any brand bit work the same?

The main reason I'm curious is because when I was at Home Depot recently, the guy helping me said that the Bosch drills are picky with the fitting of other brand bits. That's what made me wonder if it applies to Makita too.

Unless you are talking about the big demolition drills then any bit will fit any drill that is big enough to hold it. You gotta watch those guys in the stores, sometimes they know what they are talking about, but a lot of the time they have no clue at all. I've been in Lowes and Home Depot a few times and watched them give horrible advice. Once they leave I usually go over and tell the customer the right way to do it.

The drill bit really shouldn't make a difference. And actually even a cheap drill bit can last a long time if you have a drill bit sharpener. For the most part, a standard drill bit is a standard drill bit. About the only ones that would make a difference in how they fit are some of the drill bits for the old hand operated crank carpentry drills. Those have a diamond shape on the end to keep the drill bit from turning in the drill.

Unless you own stock in Makita there is no real reason to purchase the Makita brand drill bits. That said...

The Makita brand bits are real nice. I don't know about the Dewalt. The country where the bits are manufactured is important to remember. China steel is inferior to US steel. Makita steel used to be comparable to US steel (Irwin, etc.).
Additionally drill bits cut better at different speeds, depending on diameter and angle of bit cutting edge. A machinist would know the optimal speed for cutting without burning the bit.

Driver bits are a better example. I found using the bulk driver tips don't last near as long as a card stock pair of driver bits from Black and Decker or Irwin or Dewalt.

With all due respect, I'll assume you aren't strictly guided by AD HYPE. Obviously Makita, as well as millions of other organizations is not a NON profit situation.

USE what best suits the NEED, for the particular job. IE: any brand drill bit, specific to what you are trying to accomplish.

Again, and with no offense meant; if you happened to use a generic BIT in your Makita; it would not cause the Makita to smoke/burn/vanish in a cloud of particle dust.

Sounds to me like that "Saleman's Salary" is part hourly based, and part commision based.
Therefore, he really wants you to spend as much as he can sucker you into so that his (x)% gives him a decent paycheck next week.

Maybe he has plans to run the kids down to the beach over the weekend and needs your extra money !!

Any tool, such as drills, saws, routers, sanders, etc. It does not matter what brand name supplies you use. I just bought a new Dewalt Jig Saw and Orbital Sander. I also ordered my saw blades and sanding pads from Amazon, the advantage is I get to read what others think of them before I buy them. Not really the case in a mortor & brick store, you buy..you try...if its good you'll buy again. If it sucks your burnt and pick another to repeat the process next time.

Don't get any supplies from Ebay - they are total garbage and do not last.
Amazon is good - they are right from the company via amazon.
