I don't know about the code, but i can't see a problem with putting another one in?

There's no reason i can see it wouldn't work.

Good Luck!

As they say it all depends.
Do some basic diagnosis first

The answer to your question will be yes if the cables are ok.

A driver was loaded but Windows cannot find the device. This error occurs when Windows does not detect a non-Plug and Play device.

If the device was removed, uninstall the driver, install the device, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the driver. If the hardware was not removed, obtain a new or updated driver for the device.

If the device is a non-Plug and Play device, a newer version of the driver might be needed. To install non-Plug and Play devices, use the Add Hardware wizard. Click Performance and Maintenance on Control Panel, click System, and on the Hardware tab, click Add Hardware Wizard.

First - go to the device manager

right click on my computer > properties > hardware > device manager

it will be alphabetical
if you see cd rom or cd/ dvd or whatever uninstall the driver
ignore any warnings
reboot - windows will attemtpt to install the driver

if not
next - first of all try other cds
grease and dust on cds from the humidity can cause troubles

Next open the case
- ( power cord unplugged best)
push all the cords in - both power , ide cable and ide cable on motherboard
- try again

next take off the cables to the drives - hard drive and cds
reboot
if you can get into the bios see if it sees the drive
if you have another drive or hard drive attach it instead of the cd . If it is set up the same ( jumpers as below) if the cables are intatct and pushed in properly it should read the drive

if all of the above fail - get another cd
the cheapest way is often to get a burner ( dvd or cd) on sale

note: when you install the cd there are three small rows of vertical pins ( jumpers ) there are only three settings
master , slave or cables select ( newer computer detect the drive)
There will be a plastic cover over 1 set of those jumper pins
Just match the setting on the new one to the old

If you're using Windows XP, Error Code 41 indicates "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

If you are able, I would suggest trying your CD-ROM drive in a friend's computer before you go and purchase a new one. At least, you'll know then whether your CD-ROM drive is functioning or not.

If it does work, it may be that you need to do a repair installation of Windows on your own computer for it to be recognised again, or you may need to replace the data cable from one of your IDE ports to the rear of your CD-ROM drive.

Error code 41 (according to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123) just means that the computer is set up to use the CD ROM drive but cannot find it.

The only way, that I know of, to test the wiring is to connect a new or any other drive that works. If the wiring is faulty your issue is replicated with another drive.

if your CD ROM does not work the best thing you can do is to buy new one but it is good with external CD ROM coz they dont share a power supply in the unit....
