My uncle did something like this. I dont know if it is the same trick but he propped the match up against a coin and then burned it and it burned itself away.

Yes.
You start it to burn, then when the flame gets close to your fingers, damp the fingers on the other hand, and hold the already burt part of the match with the damp fingers (this stops it burning you) then wait for the other half to burn.
