The term is known as kissing/sucking teeth... The way you associate it with just black people is amusing since both my sister and I do it and we are white : - | anyway more to the point, kissing or sucking your teeth is an act of disgust or disapproval to an act or comment that someone has carried out : - ) it is also a bad habit to do this because I get told off when I do it.

Same as a tut or to show how annoying something is and there is not hissing sound involved. Also I have heard other races do it and not as someone pointed out that people from Jamaica are the only ones to do it.

I'm not black, so I'm guessing somewhat, but a lot of my neighbors are black. It is my impression it functions as a sort of exclamation point. An "oh my goodness!" sort of comment.

Dunno - but when I hear it, I always say 'Are you practicing sucking the blood off your teeth...'cause you are gonna need to do it for real in a minute'.

Apparently, it is a sign that they are disrespecting you and think that what you have to say is worthless.
