I don't understand why any religion is taught in schools, it should be academic subjects only, leave religion to home tuition, schools should teach facts, not faiths.

The idea of Social Studies is to teach about other people so we have a better understanding of other people, this includes their culture and their religion. There is a lot of misinformation out there about the different religions that leads to stereotypes that do not reflect the true teachings and beliefs of the majority of followers of a religion.
We don't spend time studying on "our own" religion because we are not teaching religion in school, and I'm not sure what "our own" religion would be since we are such a diverse nation. We are learning about religions and cultures with which we are not familiar in order for us to understand them a little better and to learn, as in the case of the Muslims, that the majority of Muslims are not terrorists or wish anyone harm.
We have a tendency to fear what we don't know and make rash judgments about a people because of the sensationalism of what we see on TV. Education about the various cultures and religions helps us understand how we are the same as and different than other people and where other people are coming from and should help us all to get along and prevent war.

There are many schools which have taken it upon themselves to teach kids the 5 Pillars of Islam, have them make shawls or head coverings and prayer mats, and pray toward Mecca 5 times a day in order to build "tolerance". Yet, if they read a Bible silently during study hall (without a book cover to hide what it is) or pray over their lunch so that anyone can hear their whisper, they stand to serve detention or suspension in those same schools. I believe this is what the asker is asking about. Basically, there are those in our government who believe that our kids need to know about everything but Christianity, and will encourage other beliefs to be taught as "tolerance" studies. Apparently, Islam and other religions are incredibly "tolerant" of others and Christianity is just so "intolerant". Oddly enough, these lawmakers have probably never been to Asia to see just how "tolerant" things are there. Odd...
If we're going to let religious teaching into school, then it should be a fair playing field; if not, keep all religions out of school.

When I was at school (a long time ago admittedly) we learnt about all the major world religions in Religious Education, though it concentrated on Christianity naturally. It helped us understand other people's cultures more. Maybe that's why, despite what happened the other week in Glasgow, that Scottish people haven't villified the whole Muslim community as they seem to have done elsewhere.

I think it is important for children to learn about different faiths. I am a christian but i realy believe that a lot of the racist problems we have in the uk are mainly down to ignorance and fear. The more we teach about all religions, the easier it will be for our children to be tolerant towards others. This includes muslim, jewish, christian, athiests, etc. This way also, the children can dicide for themselves what they want to believe. How can they truly make a choice when they no nothing of other faiths.
It is just a shame that the FEW extremists make racism easier.

there are a number of texts books and classes for theology classes and that they don't seem to be set up the way which you're offering. Religions must be defined from as much as a non-bias view as available. as a procedures as a results of fact the "mom and dad, please purchase your toddlers a Rosary" is going, that shouldn't and in all probability does not be allowed in faculties whilst you evaluate it truly is making the newborn follow the religion, not discover out approximately it. I discover out approximately technological wisdom in technological wisdom classification yet I wasn't asked to purchase a microscope. And Jeff, you recognize you do not ought to purchase a e book of Mormon, stupid. besides, your advice for coaching faith isn't stable. i think of you should take a seat down in on a theology classification at your nearest college just to get an theory of ways they are run.

they can get their own religion in church or mosque etc, at least they have a good chance in understanding others traditions if they learn something new at school.
my kids are brought religionless, so all religions are other peoples religions to them, lets them broaden their minds. besides other religions, kids from the religious families can learn about their own too at school, just not only.

And what, might I ask, is "our own?" I'm Pagan and don't ever recall being taught anything in Religious Education about that during my school years.

What is our own exactly? Last time I checked, "our" referred to all of us, and we don't have a single religion, or in some cases... any religion.
