I have been cleaning this whole week and wondered...
My new father-in-law is visiting tomorrow. His home is **** and span-I don´t know if he cleans it, or hires someone to do it. What do you notice when you visit others? I am washing windows today, and just don´t want to overlook something.
Or, do you not notice how someone else´s home looks, and just enjoy yourself?
He is not staying with us, but at a hotel, but will visit us for meals for a week.

Please, I do not want to offend anyone, but the **** part just means clean, not a racially charged word!

That is funny...the way it wiped out the word...
Anyway..
If you want help finding the trouble spots for dirt....
Sinks, tile floors(especially in front of the stove and frig), toilets(inside, under the seat, outside and near the floor)and counter tops refrigerators(the door handle and top), both inside and out, as well as the stove top(under the burner rings and the pans as well if you want to do a perfect job) and ventilation hood...are places that I see the dirt.
But I am not really on inspection tour when I visit my friends and I hope they feel the same. As my auntie once said,"Some of the most interesting people I know, have dust bunnies in their homes!"

My home is spotless at the moment, merely because it's for sale. My husband is very helpful, pointing out parts I just dont notice. Is your lawn mown? Have a really clean toilet and handtowel, check that the skirting boards around the bottom of the walls are dusted, and apart from that, just enjoy your visitor; truly, anyone who cares wont give a rats about your house.

I always notice smell first. Second would be clutter and a dirty floor. Make sure to run the vacuum and give the bathroom an extra cleaning! Since he's visiting for dinner, make sure your dishes, silverware, glasses etc. are clean.
Try to relax a little; i'm sure he is looking forward to the visit, not judging your housekeeping skills!

As long as your happy with the place is, why do you worry , your married to is son not him. The answer to your Q is, when I go to someone else´s house, I go to see them not to see how clean their house is. Everybody has different life style´s , some people work hard all week & have no time to clean, but live just as well, other´s have nothing better to do with their time, and like having their homes like show room´s , Just relax, and be who you are

Sounds like he has someone who cleans his home. More then likely a service. What I notice in other peoples houses. But I work for a cleaning company and I do spot checks on my employee's Baseboards. Dust on ceiling fans, light fixtures. Around toliets . My biggest pet peeve though is dirt around the drain and in the drain.

The first thing I notice are people that clean their homes and leave piles of stuff laying around. I guess they don't see it because it's been there a while, but it drives me nuts that they will spend all that time cleaning around piles. (Magazines stacked on tables, toys piled into corners, etc.). Also, a dirty carpet is very noticable. If there are stains on carpets or dust bunnies in corners of floor. And of course, kitchen counters. If they clean the counter, but again, leave bags of food or cereal boxes stacked neatly in a corner, it looks bad. Put everything away. :)

Toilet, the bottled shampoos, the sink, the fridge, the kitchen utensils, the phone, the laptop - these all the things that the owner might go unnoticed but the guest will.

Clutter, I always notice clutter. I just assume that if people can't put things away, they couldn't be very clean.
