Mediator is usually way cheaper if it's going to be a civil disucssion.

There is no preferred route here, just a matter of which gets you to your desired outcome. Some attorneys will also bring a mediator in to see if things can be agreed upon without going to court. The issue is whether or not two people can come to agreement on property, alimony, child support without tearing each other apart. A mediator works only if the two can agree otherwise it's off to court with an attorney.

Attorney because there are some states and some Judges that will not accept a Mediator and you do not find out until you get a court date. and all divorces even the friendly ones go to court.
PS don't get just any attorney make sure your attorney specializes in divorce.

If it's amicable choose a mediator for a smoother transition.
If it's all out war go for the attorney.

courts here normally ask for mediation first since court time is expensive. If that does not pan out it goes to court.
