Drastic some boats have more keel weight than others some have shallow water keels that are good on the lake but horrible on the ocean. Some boats are better quality others more roomy. they vary by a huge amount. So pick very wisely by sailing other boats and find out what you want a racer a cruiser a ocean going adventure machine or a simple day sailer.

There are quite a few like cruisers, live aboard, weekender, racers, Off shore racers. Full keel, fin keel.shoal draft, deep draft, twin keel, retractable keels, center cockpit, aft cockpit. pilot house, riggings are sloop, ketch, cutter, yawl, schooner, etc. The wider they are the more comfort you have, also the slower they are the longer the faster. There are as many sail boats as there are cars,All depends on what your going to do for how long an how much $ you have to spend.Best to charter a few an get a feel of the wind in your face.

Boats are like buying a computer or a car. Before you buy one, you need to figure out what you want it to do. Are you going to cruise, circumnavigate, live aboard, weekend sailing, overnight trips, day sailing, racing? etc. Then you need to figure out how many people you plan on having on board all of the time and how many guests you plan on taking along and for how long (day sailing, weekend, etc). Then there is the big question of budget. How much can you do on your own, do you need to pay someone to rig the boat, etc.
Once you've worked this out, send me an email and I'll give you some sugesstions.
