I don't know that I would use the word "destroying" but to some extent it is an issue. Most baseball players chase the money in the form of "free agency" which generates a lot of player movement. On the other hand, some team owners will not participate in the free agent market if they believe the team will lose money. Baseball is a business and is divided into the "haves" and the "have nots" and I don't think that is good for baseball. Baseball is a big money industry and MLB will have to continue to address the issues that favor teams in a larger market at the detriment of teams in a smaller market.

It's funny that a lot of people admire George Steinbrenner as an owner because he will spend money to get players, then they hate the Yankees because they spend money and they hate the way baseball has become a sport of rich teams poor teams. It's good that the players are paid well now, after a century of being underpaid, but money is taking away from sports the main purpose FOR sports: entertainment. It's less fun. People see their favorite teams become less viable than AA teams, they see their favorite players become business yuppies, and the talk on sports TV and in the print media is just as likely to be about this team's budget or that player's salary as it is to be about this guy's on base percentage or that team's winning streak. Steinbrenner et al took a lot of the fun out of the game. Money is important, but it's too pervasive.

yes. The overpaid athletes demand more money for mediocre play. then the owners have to increase tickets prices to tickets to see these teams(even when they have not made it to the playoffs in years), then the average family can no longer afford to take the entire family to the ballpark (5 tix in 300 section at citizens bank total $117, not counting parking, food, drinks & souvenirs). Its crazy they will lose the middle class fan base. Professional sports fans will consist of the elite, with high incomes. Athletes dont get it, I'd rather watch a bunch of no names play AAA,for $10 a seat, then fork out the ridiculous money their teams want.

Although the salaries in many sports are obscene, I still don't think the money destroys the essence of sport (whatever you think that is). Players, racers, competitors still want to win and put forth their best effort most of the time (we all have off days). For the most part, I think they all want to perform at their best to defeat their opponents while still honoring their opponents efforts. In short, I think that sportsmanship still exists in most areas of sports.
