Mine sound kind like "pffffft". They're very quiet normally so I don't need to worry about letting rip in public.
I have a friend who is known for her foul smelling emissions, (I actually think there is something wrong inside her) it's fun to stand next to her and do them because everyone blames her. I will never ever own up!
I hardly ever fart by accident, although it's quite fun to do them on purpose - walk up behind a group of people then go the the other side of the bar and watch them argue and blame each other.
I don't believe farting is a fatal disease, at least not to the farter themself. The people around them however... my abovementioned friend almost made me vomit on one occasion.
It's not appropriate to fart at the dinner table or in polite company. But if you must, silent and violent is better than loud and proud.

as a family we all have fun with it. its just hilarious when you are with your close friends and family who get your sick kind of humor. In public its more embarrassing. although it relieves a lot of pressure in your stomach, holding in your farts can really start to hurt
