Take supershuttle or something similar. If you figure in BART costs, then MUNI, and the hassle of waiting around with all your bags and whatnot, I would think its worth the extra 8 bucks to get dropped off right in front of your hotel, rather than potentially getting lost and confused on your first day in the City.
You don't need to rent a car once you are in SF, unnecessary expense. If you are in a hotel on Lombard you can easily take busses to where you want to go. The 43 (runs down Lombard) will take you straight to the Haight/Ashbury and Golden Gate Park, as well as almost all the way to Twin Peaks. Walk three blocks up to Union St. and catch the 45 to North Beach/Chinatown, or you can walk. You can easily walk to Fisherman's Wharf.

Hi,
You can catch BART right at the Airport. BART will get you downtown near 9th Street at the Civic Center station. Go up one level to Mini. Take any car to Van Ness. This is bout one or two stops from Civic Center. The Van Ness bus will take you all the way to Lombard Street. Catch the bus at Lombard to your Hotel.
Make sure you pick up a transfer on Muni, it's good for a couple of hours. You'll have no trouble getting to your Hotel in that time.

The easiest way would be to take a shuttle, which you can catch on the upper deck. Just look for the signs. It costs about $18.
And sadly, hooking up with public transportation from Lombard (I'm assuming you're west of Van Ness Avenue) isn't that convenient.
However, if you must take public transportation from the airport, take BART to 16th Street, then catch the 49 bus on Mission. It will take you to Van Ness & Greenwich; you'll then have to walk a few blocks.

tonalc 1's answer is a good one. However, walking a "few" blocks might be confusing, since Lombard extends from Van Ness almost to the Golden Gate bridge.
Chances are the hotel will be closer to the Van Ness end, but it might be a good idea to call the SF hotel/motel and ask what they recommend.
