Is this a trick question? The US detonated three atomic bombs in 1945 - one during a test at Alomagordo in Nevada, and two which were dropped on Japan - one on Hiroshima and one on Nagasaki. The test bomb wasn't 'dropped', though, so the answer is 'Japan'.

What planet are you from? Japan, a country with which we were at war; and it wasn't one atomic bomb; it was two. One on Aug. 06 on Hiroshima and the second on Aug. 09 on Nagasaki. We should have dropped one on Tokyo, but I guess we ran out. In fact, at that time only two were ready for use. They even had names: Fat Man and Little Boy, based on their relative sizes.

A lot of people wail about how many people died, but just as many died in the three night incendiary bombing of Dresden, Germany, using conventional bombs, so I fail to see the difference. Of course the incendiary bombs did not generate any radioactive fall out, so I guess the Germans were lucky they surrendered in May.

Simple answer:- "JAPAN"!! And, it was NOT just ONE device, - there WERE, in fact, TWO of them!

The City of HIROSHIMA was devastated, by the dropping of the FIRST atomic device, - which had the codename "LITTLE BOY", - on the morning of August 6, 1945. That device was dropped, in order to FORCE the Japanese Governent to SURRENDER, after almost FOUR years of war, against the United States, - which BEGAN, when Japanese forces ripped apart the American fleet, by attacking PEARL HARBOUR, - on the island of OAHU, in the HAWAIIAN ISLANDS, - on what, - according to the American President, FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT, - was a "DAY OF INFAMY!", - Sunday, December 7, 1941!

When the detonating of THAT device, - which exploded with the "FORCE" of ONE MILLION TONNES of TNT, - did NOT achieve that aim, - Japan's forces fought ON, - a SECOND device, - no code name was GIVEN, - was detonated over the City of NAGASAKI.
