It was not a tropical cyclone. You don't get tropical cyclones in winter and even in summer you don't get them that far south. It was an East Coast Low. These are intense low pressure systems that usually develop on troughs after they move off the coast. They can intensify very quickly and usually last for 24 hours or so. The storm that put the Sygna onto Stockton Beach north of Newcastle in the 1970s was an East Coat Low. Sydney's wettest ever day, 327mm in 24 hours in August 1986, was another East Coast Low.

The systems occur most frequently in the winters following the collapse of an El Niño. The El Niño ended in March and we have had three East Coast Lows this winter so far.

I recommend Pokolbin too. It's a cute village with a cute name! There are good little art galleries, a friendly sprawling old fashioned pub, a great Italian restaurant, lots of small wineries, sculptures by the side of the road and pretty scenery. We stayed recently in a self contained cottage at a vineyard and walked around the grapes, and then drank the grapes while watching the grapes grow, and then drank some more grapes... which was all very pleasant. Edit - CMC - are you thinking about Paterson (starts with P)? It's a historic village, worth a visit too I agree.
