1.) Get those cans to the outside - "They ARE the source of the problem."
2.) Get those Raid Foggers and set one off in each room. This will deal with 90% of the problem - from here it will be at a manageable level.
3.) wait about one week and set off the foggers again just in case of "reinfestation" and hidden larvae/maggots.
Note: Above all else be sure garbage is kept outside. Collecting cans is nice if that is what he wants to do ... But Not In The House !! I would not even allow him to Bring Them In Period. Crush them outside, and keep them in an enclosed container; such as, a garbage can with a closed garbage bag and a lid (on the can at all times).

I heard this remedy on the radio a few weeks ago, tried it out, and it works...for the fruit fly/gnat things anyway. Pour about 2" of apple cider vinegar into a container (cup, bowl, whatever is handy) and put in a few drops of dishwashing liquid (Palmolive, Joy, Dawn, etc.) stir it up and let it set. Slowly but surely they were drawn to the mixture - it must have been the sweet smell of the vinegar that drew them and the dish soap killed them. I would make up several containers of it since you have so many. It might take a few days, but it works. I checked mine and each time I looked, there was another one in the cup. As far as the ants go, about 15 yrs ago I had spilled some Avon Skin So Soft bath oil and it killed some ants. I don't know if it will work for you, but you might try it.

If these are in your home, get a can of "Raid" and spray your house, go for a walk or, take a ride for a few moments, until the smell goes. This should do it, Then clean up any foodstuffs around the place and, keep it clean.

Clean out your fridge, make sure there are no pop cans laying around your house, clean out the garbage can, make sure there isn't any fruit or veggies laying around anywhere, inspect the soil in all your potted plants, and if none of that works after a week call an exterminator.

Use room foggers in each room. Then wash out anything left in the cans. If you have potted plants in the house pour silica sand (sandbox sand) on top of the dirt. Gnats can lay their egg in the soil and the sand will kill the new ones when the try to wiggle out of the soil.
