I would definitely recommend an IUD. They have two different kinds -- one with hormones and one without hormones. IUDs are one of the most reliable forms of reversible birth control and they last for several years depending on which type you get.

ok, I'm going to help you out again. Birth control pills do have side effects but they're all good. As soon as I got on the pill almost four years ago, my cramps eased up, my skin cleared up completly, I was able to predict EXACTLY when my aunt flo would come visit, and my PMS symptoms like the anger and the bloating went away. In women's health it says that birth control pills lower a woman's testosterone levels which may lead to a decreased sex drive. A friend of mine says that's happened to her but I've had no decreased sex drive in the past four years. My husband and I still act like newlyweds!
Women's Health magazine also says that taking birth control pills for only six months lowers your risk for getting colorectal cancer by 39%. If you take it for 3 years, your risk is cut almost in half. Also... it steadies your hormone levels so you're not super emotional. Like I said, It cut my PMS symptoms out.
And best of all, women on birth control pills have stronger Knee joints than women who don't take it.
Now on the other hand, she could also take what's called a DEPO shot which is a birth control shot that lasts for months at a time. This is the one with all the bad side effects. You end up without a period for a few months but when you do finally get it... it can last for two weeks or longer as opposed to the 5 day average. PMS symptoms are made worse by the shot which means she'll be even moodier than normal and the cravings get worse which means she could gain weight. Some women on the DEPO shot gain a lot of weight.
Then there's the patch. Not to sure about that one since the navy only offers the pill or the shot. But seriously... she should try the pill. The doctor should start her off on a pill that has the lowest available hormone levels because she's so young and she's never been on it before. Make sure she asks about all the different brands and possible side effects she could experience.
Oh... and before I forget... Some women have reported an slight increase in breast size due to their birth control pills. The pills release the hormones your body releases when it's pregnant which leads to a slight increase in breast tissue like a pregnant woman's body. I've noticed a difference in my bra!

In relation to the birth control pills, the most common side effect which is weight gain is caused by water which comes from the hormones in the pill. They can also make the breasts more tender and the way I found to deal with that is to wear a larger bra.
As for what the safest method is I would recommend talking to your dr as well to see what they suggest.

An IUD has the highest reliability percentage, plus the fact that once is you get it, you completely forget its there, so you do not need to continue worrying about it daily, why this was so good for me is cos i am totally forgetful, and like you i wanted to wait a while after i got married before making babies so i got an IUD, just before my wedding, it had no side effects apart from a little discharge which lasted for a few days which my DR told me was my body getting used to the new introduction.
I took it out 1year 8months later and got pregnant the same month, now am 6 months pregnant and am doing fine.

You could use a condom-very safe but tends to decrease the sensitivity of your penis . Your wife could go on the pill. best to speak to a doctor about the benefits and draw backs.
just don't do what some people do and rely on withdrawal of the penis before you orgasm. a guy at work got his with pregnant by trying that one.
by the way-well done for waiting till you are married to have sex.
