The previous answers are correct - it comes from an old Scottish word mank meaning defective (old French manc or manqué)

It is strange if you do not state which language is the word from, as I remember that the same word Mankad is a surname in Gujrati, but in Marathi it has an altogether different meaning which is known to those familiar with the word.
