I think it really depends on the movie - there are fantastic movies from every decade i think. Also i love 80's movies because a lot of them remind me of being a kid - like watching rocky with my brothers brings back happy feelings etc....
Maybe it's the same kinda thing for you

Better storylines, yes, animation and special effects, no. There were very good special effect back then, but not the state of the art technologies that there are today, so the movies had to rely on better plots, character development and storylines than they do now.

The movie "Transformers" in the theatres now is such a blockbuster due the special effects; however, the storyline is stale and formula and it would be a dud if it were not for the phenomenal special effects of seeing the transformers change from a car to a robot (or vice versa). If it were produced in the '90's it would have been a bomb, not a blockbuster.

Technologically speaking, no they were not. The special effects and editing capabilities that films makers have access to today are far more advanced than those of the 1990s. But the other half of the question lies in the category of opinion. For example, you may see a really "crappy" movie in the 2000s, then you might say that it was worse than a really good movie from the 1990s.

movies from the 90's had more...meaningful content because of that era's culture. today its mostly special effects coz that's the trend. so 10 years from now, whatever the trend is, the movie themes will follow.
