An animal is anything that is not a plant or fungus. So birds are animals. so are insects, and frogs and alligators and lions. They are all ANIMALS.

If you're looking for the difference between a mammal and a bird, that's a whole different question.

Mammals have mammary glands (for which they are named) meaning that they can feed their young by producing milk in the breasts (and yes, male mammals have breasts but they do not produce milk). They also have hair or vestiges of hair and they give live birth to their young (almost all do).

Birds lay eggs, feed their young by bringing food back to the nest, have feathers instead of hair have a modified mouth ( a beak).

The quick and easy way is to say that birds have wings, while animals do not. You can also say that for the most part, an animal gives birth to live young (mammal) and birds only lay eggs. Birds have feathers, animals do not. Birds have beaks, animals do not.

"and the only other weird looking mammal that lays eggs is the platypus, which is almost extinct by the way"

Far from being almost extinct, the platypus is common and found in the rivers of the coast and ranges in Tasmania, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Quensland. I have them in the river at the bottom of my garden. They are, however, shy and most people don't see them.

Can I just say that the Ecidna is a mammal that lays eggs and I wouldn't say Platypus is nearly extinct.
