No, you cannot break your lease if your apartment was illegally entered. Of course, if the landlord did not supply secure locks on the exterior doors of the property, you might have a valid complaint.

Generally speaking, however, such an act is not sufficient cause to invalidate a lease agreement. Would you expect that a car lease could be invalidated because the car was broken into ? Same concept applies here.

You probably have read your lease and there is no provision for this. Is this a large complex or a small building. Either, way if you need an extention, here in NYC, most of my clients have been able to request a month to month situation explaining that your problem. If all else fails, your local congressman's office has the guidelines. Be as assertive but calm. The Village Voice in NY or Craigslist or the NYTimes Sunday paper are good sources. There is also an internet site sublet.com which is good for furnished apts. Then, you can always locate me since I do real estate.

i don't believe so maybe if you have nice landlords but most will still turn it in as a break in the lease and expect you to pay off your lease

I don't think so. Unless it was your landlord/manager, or it was directly his/her fault, such as poorly locking or closing doors and windows. You might be able to if you can prove you fear for your life or safety there. But you would need to go to court for all of those reasons.
