Some remedies I have used in the past when WD-40 was not available are:
Cooking Spray/PAM
Baby Oil
Spray butter
Vaseline/Petroleum Jelly
Vegetable Oil
Shampoo
Dishwashing Soap/Laundry Detergent (Liquid)
These have all helped in a pinch. You get resourceful when you are on a fixed budget. Sprays obviously work best.

WD-40 is fine, but any penetrating oil will work.
For that matter, good old 3-M Machine oil will work, but the spray penetrating oils might be less messy.

WD-40 is NOT an oil, for one of the last times. WD-40 is a cleaner, not an oil. after using it then put a drop of oil on these spots.

Graphite is best
WD40 stands for Water Displacement 40th attempt. It is good for alot of things but graphite is best for hinges and locks.

Wonder Drug will do the job, but so will 3-in-1 oil, not as messy, or "fragrant"
