Anyone else find it funny or even weird that the last song perform in New York at the Live Earth was Message in a Bottle by The Police which had as it last verse, a hundred million bottles washed up on the shore. Hows that for saving Earth from pollution! Sting really best send an SMS to the world!

Message in a Bottle was an appropriate song for the cause if you don't take it literally. "I hope that someone gets my message in a bottle" is like saying, I hope someone out there is listening. Then the end of the song is saying that there are millions who feel the same. That is a positive ending to the song.

Yeah, no one should throw a bottle in the water, but a song called "Sending an Email to the world" wouldn't sound as good.

ADD: Yeah, that does sound better. "Sendin' out an IMS"

Pay attention to the next two lines of the song: "Guess I'm not alone in bein' alone; a hundred million castaways looking for a home."

He's saying that the experience of feeling alienated is common to many people. Even when we are surrounded by people, it can be hard to make a personal connection. As others have pointed out, it is a metaphor.

Sharp observation, though!

Do you really have to take things so literally?

What it means to me is that more people are listening to the message than you might think. People really do care. Well at least I think thats what the message was.

Then again maybe you're right. We're so busy trying to do the right thing that we have forgotten that doing the right thing is NOT doing things. (ie - in Environmentalism its more important what you don't do that what you do do)

The Earth doesn't need our help - thats just human ego. The Earth is a beautiful place and maybe all we have to do is just stop desecrating it.

LOL I agree. But it's a fantastic song, do they need to change it so that it becomes flawless?

And I believe they're not literally mean it, check out the song and you'll know the meaning.

P.S.: This song was the best song for this situation.

Lol! Perhaps it was merely a metaphor...
