Diesel engines have plenty of advantages. Because they can use much higher compression ratios than gasoline engines, they have higher efficiency, thus getting better mileage per gallon of fuel.
However, diesel engines are not fun to drive. They have a relatively narrow power band, so are not generally good for racing. However, the Audi R10 is a rather large exception to this rule.

Ok, first off, diesel engines are more fuel efficient in comparison to same sized gasoline engines. Because of the way the fuel ignites, it burns far more efficiently and fully, thus causing great fuel economy. Diesel engines, by nature, will last longer then gasoline engines, but they do need to be cared for, as would any engine in any vehicle.
But, allow to to address some issues that have been mention by someone who obviously knows very little about diesel engines. Diesels don't "tend" to get moisture in the fuel....its just more common when left for longer periods of time. Most diesel engines that would need to come with a block heater installed at the factory. Its not called a "wait light" its called a "glow plug light" and ALL diesels will have glow plugs. But, the glow plugs DO NOT heat up the fuel, they heat the cylinder head, to make it easier for the compression of air to raise the temp in the cylinder. Diesel engine DO NOT compress a fuel air mixture, they compress air only, when the fuel is injected at the peak of the piston travel, it ignites from the pressure and temp. of the air in the cylinder. I have no clue why this guy thinks that diesels compress a fuel air mixture until it ignites....that's sad...very sad. And the whole oil with no fuel thing....that's dumb...and wrong.
I have a 1984 Suburban with a 6.2 diesel engine, and "whtsthislif4" please tell me where you are a mechanic at, because I will advise anyone I know with a diesel engine to stay the heck away from you. You have no clue how a diesel engine work, and your are obviously no mechanic, even mechanics who don't work on diesels have a good understanding of how they work.

I love mine. It is a 1978 Dodge Diesel with the 6 cyl Mitsubishi in it. I have 350 000 miles on it and have had to do nothing to the engine, but have had to do 2 trany rebuilds.
Since it has all stainless steel lines, I have been running bio diesel for the last 10 years at about .85 a gallon.
It will have to die before I get rid of it.

In a truck more torque...In a car way better fuel mileage.
Advantages.... No spark plugs or ignition parts to go bad like distributor caps, or coils.
Disadvantages...... Are cold natured. In extreme cold weather the should have a heater in the oil pan, And they tend to get moisture in the fuel.
Also Needs to have glow plugs or heater to heat up the fuel so it will combust, on initial start up. Hence the wait light you see in all diesel cars and trucks. the wait light is so the glowplugs can heat up the fuel. Once the fuel is heated up enough to ignite when the engine is turned over and compression can ignite the fuel the glow plugs turn off and the wait light goes out.
Diesel fuel will not ignite until it reaches 125degrees.
And the extreme compression is what ignites the fuel once running. When the piston reaches the top of it's travel with the fuel and air mixed together the fuel gets hotter and hotter and once it reaches the top of it's travel the fuel heats up to that 125degree temperature and ignites itself.
If oil leaks into the cylinders really bad the oil itself will combust and the engine won't shut off. Even with no fuel...But this is rare.
And diesel engines last longer than gas engines. Tractor trailer trucks have them because they have all that torque, And can go for almost 1,000,000 miles

I like the European diesels, lots of grunt, great gas mileage and if it was not for the sticker on the gas cap you would not know its a diesel.

Adavantage of having diesel is last lot longer than gas engines. 4x more if you take care of it. Gas perform better than diesel. Gas cost little more than diesel.
