I realize the shot reacts differently for each individual. My doc. told me that the only reason women gain weight on any birth control is because they have an increase in appetite. is this true? I am most concerned with the hair loss thing. i have heard that you lose hair while on the shot. is this a fact and can anyone tell me the reason it would affect the hair? i guess the hair loss thing is my main concern.

Well, everything in your body is controlled by hormones (okay, not everything, but go with me). the Depo shot is a HUGE jolt of hormones being rushed into your system all at once that has to last 6 months. That's pretty damn potent. your hair growth can suffer because of that.

Weight gain is very very common, as is depression. If you've ever been clinically depressed, you probably shouldn't take it. Even really happy people (one of my friends in fact) can get really depressed on it.

If you're really worried about it, don't get it. There were just too many big side effects for me to get it. Read up on the shot and see if people like it, hate it, ect online.

Good luck!

I had NO increase in appetite and I still gained a lot of weight.

Though it reacts differently from woman to woman, a majority of people on depo provera have extremely negative side affects, so bad that there are several class action lawsuits against the makers of depo.

I was on it for four years and I am so glad I am OFF of it. I will never ever recommend this shot for anyone.

Google "depo provera lawsuit" and also check out the reviews at http://www.rateitall.com/t-330-birth-control-methods.aspx

Don't take it. There are a lot of bad side effects that happen and because one shot stays in your blood for fourth months if you realize you don't like it you can't stop it and you'll still have to side effects. I was so hormonal I had to see a therapist because the dosage was so strong and I have mid cycle bleeding for two weeks all through out the two years I took it.
If you want to take an eazy birth control take nuvaring or the patch. A lot less side effects, eazy to remember, and you can stop taking it when you want, like if you realize your hair is falling out.

my biggest fear with Depo was the bone loss. I met a girl on a plane once who was in her early 20's and had the bones of a 70 year old woman beacuse she had been on depo for so long and her body had reacted badly to it.
- that story scared me away from it.
