Bmw alarm , 1998 bmw323i?

How long is the battery supposed to last for the remote alarm system, my alarm was working fine for the last 3months, after not working, could it be the battery, the red light is showing when pressed, but nothing happens.

There are a number of different types of BMW keys out there.

I suspect your key looks like this:

...and your alarm remote is on a separate keyfob, then you will need to buy a new battery for it (cheap).

Depending on actual usage, a new battery would generally last 1-2 years.

Newer keys like this one:

...have integrated alarm remote comtrol and a rechargeable battery in it and is recharged everytime the key is in the ignition.

Mine lasted almost 9 years (97 M3). After replacing the battery in the remote, I still had some issues with my alarm (red light on the key fob would light but the alarm wouldn't turn on/off occasionally). Last year, it became much worse. To the point I couldn't use the alarm at all.

There are two additional things to check to get your key fob working again:

First, have your CAR battery checked. Low voltage can cause the antenna to receive poorly (sounds weird, but its true). My 1997 BMW battery died last year (10 years out of a battery is impressive!), changing helped alot.

Second, take the key fob apart and look at the battery connection. BMW is notorious (unfortunately) for having bad solder joints in their electronics; and the alarm key fob is no exception. Mine actually broke on one side of the battery holder in the key fob. I soldered it back together, and bingo works perfect again.

So check your car battery, and check the solder joints in the key fob.

Good luck!

The remote alarm battery should last 5 - 10 years depending on the frequency of usage. The red light (LED) requires very little current to operate. Replace your alarm battery ASAP.
Protect your investment.
